How Do Plants Change as They Grow?

The first graders in Mrs. Morgan's class have been working on answering the question " How do plants change as they grow?" They read many informational texts during our Wonders Reading whole group and small group. The first graders were also able to become gardeners! They planted radish seeds. After a week they seed sprouted and grew taller. The class was able to try to sprouts. They were delicious and tasted just like eating a radish root!
We even had Mr. Berryman try them. :)
Next the class planted a dinosaur garden that contained plants and seeds that were around at the same time as the dinosaurs! The first plant we prepared was called a Selaginella lepidophylla. This plant came to us completely dried up and dead looking. We soaked it in water, and overnight it looked more alive. This special plant is able to live without moisture for up to fifty years. It will blow around in a desert until it lands in water, then it will rehydrate and grow again. AMAZING! Finally, the class also planted cyad (Palm) seeds, a fern mix, and pine tree seeds. What a great learning experience! Please stop in our room to see how our experiments continue to grow and change!
A special thank you to the Norfolk Public Schools Foundation for granting us the grant to make all of this important learning happen in our classroom!
