Preparation Under Way For State Swim Meet

As our winter sports come to an end, and many of our students experience their last practices, meets, games, and state competitions, our swim and dive team is among those who have qualified a handful of swimmers for their state competition this week.

Our swim and dive program has been very successful in qualifying many athletes for the state competition this year. Last week I had the opportunity to speak with two senior swimmers who will be competing for their final time this week at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln. I first spoke with senior Katherine Meuret who’s been competitively swimming for 11 years. Meuret said she and her team go all out before swim meets, there’s no taking it easy. The only rest time this team really sees is right before conference and state. When asked what were some challenges she’s overcome to become a better swimmer she mentioned that she’s grown a lot more leadership, and that she doesn’t compare herself to other swimmers. “It’s me against the clock, not me against other swimmers.” says senior swimmer Katherine Meuret. Mueret being the last of other older siblings who also swam and were coached by Coach Nelson, describes her senior year as a bittersweet feeling. Her biggest takeaway from her years in this program is the leadership Coach Nelson installs into all the swimmers.

I later spoke with senior Cameron Korth, who’s been involved in the program all four years of high school. Korth said that the best part of being on the team was getting the opportunity to meet new people. Korth mentioned that what makes this years seniors special is the leadership they hold. Korth’s biggest thing he’s had to work on to become a better athlete in this program is changing his schedule around to maintain an adequate sleep schedule. Something he would choose to say to future athletes in this program is to work hard, train hard, meet people, and have fun!
