Every year 60 of the most talented senior football players from around the state of Nebraska are selected to play in the Shrine Bowl. It is a huge honor to be chosen to participate. Norfolk High School’s very own, senior Devin Denker, was one of the lucky ones chosen.
The Shrine Bowl is a football game that showcases the talents of many student athletes from all around the country. Different games take place in different states. This summer, the 59th game is to take place. It will take place on June 3rd, 2017, at 2:00 at the Ron and Carol Cope Stadium on the campus of the University of Nebraska- Kearney. The players in the Shrine Bowl normally get flown out to Chicago and get to spend quality time with people in the Shriners Hospital and make a positive impact on their lives.
In the Shrine Bowl, there are the North and the South teams. Denker will be playing on the North team. Denker played on the offensive line throughout his high school football career. He is signed to continue his education and play football at Morningside University in Sioux City, Iowa. The North team is coached by Mark Hudson. Hudson is the head football coach at Boone Central. The assistant coaches are Chris Koozer, Seth McClain, Ron Evans, Russ Harvey, and Dan Zoucha. The South team is coached by Matt Turman, Omaha Skutt Catholic’s head football coach.
There are a few other players from throughout the Northeast Nebraska area that have been selected to play in the game. Jason Hahlbeck from O’Neill, Stephen Hills from Hartington Cedar Catholic, Hoss Smith from Oakland-Craig, and Cole Wemhoff from Humphrey St. Francis will also be accompanying Denker on the North squad.
All in all, being chosen for the Shrine Bowl football game is what many athletes dream of ever since they are a little kid. Norfolk High’s Denker, got a little bit of a dream come true. He will represent Norfolk very well in the game!
