March News from Mrs. Vanness

First and Second Grade News - Mrs. Vanness’ Class

Spring is just around the corner!  The past few months have just flown by and our classroom has been buzzing with activity.

First of all, I would like to say thank you to all of the parents for attending parent-teacher conferences that we had at the beginning of February.  It is so nice to sit down and talk with each of you.  We have the greatest parents at Lincoln/Montessori, and I know that all of the staff here would agree.

We loved celebrating with our friends on Valentine’s Day.  We had amazing and creative Valentine boxes and bags and it was so much fun to see all of the creativity that went into making them.

Our classroom has been filled with activity this past month.  In our cultural area we have been studying President’s Day, Groundhog’s Day, and learning about people who have changed the world during Black History Month.  We finished our penguin study and have been following the Olympics in South Korea and keeping track of the US medal count.  We had a visitor, Tia, from Germany speak to us about her culture and country. (Thank you Thompsons!)  We also had visitors from the middle school JOOI club read to our students.

We are hard at work on our contracts too.  In the math area we have been working on subtraction with and without borrowing, place value, addition with carrying, telling time, ordering numbers, money and fractions.  In the language area we have covered topics such as using text evidence to check for comprehension, compound words, contractions, sentence drawers, classification, graphemes and grammar work just to name a few.

Happy March everyone!
