First and Second Grade News-Mrs. Jones’s Class

I have 21 eager-to-learn students in my classroom this year. I enjoy their excitement each Monday when they view their new work plans for the week. They cannot wait to find out the materials they will be using and what they will learn during the week!

Math is definitely the favorite subject for most of the students. First-graders are working on building their addition fact-fluency while using the Montessori Math materials. Second graders are working on place value as well as adding and subtracting with three-digit numbers.

In our language area, we have been learning about nouns and articles, and identifying the setting in a story. The students have been hard at work doing language jobs using sentence and grammar drawers, the moveable alphabet letters, and word ladders, just to mention a few.

We were able to view the life cycle of ladybugs by observing ladybug larvae transform into ladybugs. The students were excited to see the changes each day! We were also able to observe the life cycle of frogs one afternoon. The Lawson Family brought several jars of frogs at different stages of their life cycle for everyone to see. This was a super fun way to end our week!

The students have started learning about our solar system and making a fun book filled with facts. So far, they have learned some really interesting facts about the sun. For instance, about one million Earths can fit inside the sun. This was a shocking discovery!

This school year is off to a great start and we are looking forward to a wonderful year of learning together!
