Miss Howard’s First Grade Class has been growing their love for reading over the past 30 days in school! Even though we haven’t been in school long, these first graders have been having a blast taking part in their own experience of reading. Starting in First Grade at Grant Elementary, students are able to start a program called DIBS. DIBS is a program in which students are able to pick a book on their own to take home and read every night. Did you know that students that read for 20 minutes a day are exposed to 1.8 million words a year? The DIBS program is giving our students the opportunity to grow in their knowledge of vocabulary, fluency, and love and confidence in reading. Over the past 30 days, Miss Howard’s 15 First Graders have taken 350 DIBS books home! They come to school excited every morning excited to say they had read their book the night before either with their parents, to a sibling, or even out loud to a pet! The students love their freedom with this program and it keeps them excited about reading every day.
