Wow! We have had a great start to a new year! The students have been working hard at Reading Mastery and Connections. It has been wonderful to see the improvements in their reading fluency, accuracy and pacing.
In Math, we continue to work on fact fluency. The first graders are currently practicing "Doubles Plus 1" facts. The class is using their doubles facts to help them with these math facts.
For example: 7+8=____ First, they would look for the smallest number (7) and circle or put a dot by it. Next, they would double that number. (7+7=14) Finally, they would add 1 to that number. (14+1=15 so 7+8=15) The students have worked very hard to learn these facts.
The class also uses the IXL program to practice math skills. WOW! They have excelled at many skills and are making great progress. The first graders also us learning wrap ups and daily facts practice to sharpen their addition and subtraction skills. All these techniques are helping the students get ready for 2nd grade. ?
The first graders also a fun, new way to review skills. Each day, Mrs. Morgan and Mrs. Baker place a review question on a piece of paper and place it in a balloon. The balloon is blown up and placed in the math meeting area. The student of the day, pops the balloon and reads and answers the question inside. If they answer correctly they are given a small treat. We call this "Review –A-Balloo"! The first graders love it!
