JOI hosts Teens in the Driver Seat

The Norfolk Panther Jr. Optimist (JOI) Club at the Norfolk Jr. High is participating in Teens in the Driver Seat during the 2019-2020 school year. At this level, the theme is "Learn to Survive Before You Drive". During the first semester the focus has been on encouraging students to wear their seat belts when riding in the car. A compliance check completed in September found seat belt use to be 74% among students as they arrived at school. Following some information sharing and a pledge signing event in the cafeteria during lunch, a follow-up compliance check found that 81% are now wearing a seat belt. During the 2nd Semester the focus will shift to distracted driving. The Norfolk PD is assisting JOI members in their efforts!

Teens in the Driver Seat is a national program sponsored by the Texas A&M Transportation Institute. The JOI Club at Norfolk Sr. High has been doing the program for the last several years and has received numerous awards for their efforts.
