First and Second Grade News from Mrs. Jones’s Class

I have 24 eager-to-learn students in my classroom this year. I enjoy their excitement each Monday when they view their new work plans for the week. They cannot wait to find out the materials they will be using and what they will be learning during the week!

Math is definitely the favorite subject for most of the students. First-graders are working on place value, identifying even and odd numbers, telling time to the hour and half-hour, and building their addition and subtraction fact fluency. Second graders are also working on place value, along with addition with regrouping, and multiplication. Math is fun when using our Montessori math materials!

In our language area, we have been learning about nouns, articles, and adjectives. The students have been hard at work doing language jobs using sentence and grammar drawers, the moveable alphabet letters, and word ladders, just to mention a few.

In our culture area, we were able to view the life cycle of butterflies by observing our 5 caterpillars develop into butterflies. The students were excited to see the changes each day! We have been using our Montessori puzzle map materials to learn continents. So far we have studied North America and South America.

This school year is off to a great start and we are looking forward to a wonderful year of learning together!
