Mrs. Olenich's First and Second Grade Classroom

Our classroom is off to a great start this year.  The children are busy everyday with their contract work.  Contract work consists of language, math and cultural studies.  Language jobs are progressing along with student writing.  The children are encouraged to read for A.R. (Accelerated Reading). The students are working very hard to master addition and subtraction math facts.  In addition to contract work, we use Math Facts in a Flash, Xtra Math, and IXL for both math and language that utilizes technology.  We have completed our introduction of the seven continents and will be starting our focus on North America.  We are also working on life cycles with a focus on butterflies.  The children love the caterpillars!  We have one busy classroom!

Our school was full of visitors on Grandparent’s Day!  The book fair, the snacks and especially the classroom visits were a hit.  The students enjoyed showing and explaining various jobs in the classroom.  The students took time to explain the P.A.W.S charts and classroom procedures.

Along with the P.A.W.S. program (Practice kindness, Always show respect, Work to do your best, at School) the teachers are using DOJO as a way to track student progress.  The communication and feedback have been working very well.  The children are excited about the incentives.  We take time at the end of the day to discuss opportunities to learn and to share successes.

The following are some comments from the students:

You can color up and get golden tickets.

I like coloring up and getting a golden ticket. It’s the best.

I like to color up.  We get points on DOJO too.

I like working hard so I can color up.

I help others and I feel good when I get a golden ticket.
