ELL students and Social Emotional Learning

School counselors facilitate Social Emotional Learning (SEL) for their students, but sometimes, there is a language barrier that prevents English Language Learners (ELL) from learning these skills at the same rate as their peers.  Some ELL students have gone through a lot to get to the US and to Nebraska and may have experienced trauma along the way. Students who have experienced trauma need to…

Bringing Out the Best In Each Other!

For Grant 4th graders, the beginning of the school means a focus on collaborating as a team. Each day, students were given a teamwork challenge to accomplish which included building the tallest structure (with marshmallows & spaghetti), stacking cups (no touching the cups with your hands), and saving a gummy worm. Teams were encouraged to be creative in finding solutions as well as working together…

1st Graders Visit SMILE

Students in Mrs. Baker’s first grade class at Grant Elementary recently enjoyed a day at SMILE, Inc. Patty Prauner, owner and operator of SMILE, invited the students to learn more about her non-profit organization that provides therapeutic horseback riding for children and adults. The students were able to groom, saddle, and ride the horses in appreciation for their efforts of collecting money throughout…

Animal Research in Second Grade

Second Graders at Grant Elementary have learned about animals! They recently took a field trip to the Henry Doorly Zoo! For many students, this was their first visit to the zoo. Students spent the entire day touring the zoo in small groups visiting many of the exhibits and learning about animals. Before going to the zoo, each student chose a zoo animal to research. Students completed research using…

A Chance To Be a Part of History

On Wednesday, April 17th, the 4th graders traveled to Lincoln for their field trip. They explored Morrill Hall, ran out onto Memorial Field, and toured the capitol. As the 4th graders were leaving the capitol, they were asked to be a part of history. On the lawn of the capitol was a very large flag being held by veterans, EMTs, firefighters and police officers. The 4th graders were asked to help…

Folk dancing fun in music class!

One of my favorite ways to have students interact with music is to have them participate in folk dancing. At first glance you might think...wait, why are they dancing  in music? But folk dance offers many musical benefits to students!  Some of the musical skills learned are counting, keeping the steady beat, and hearing phrases/ sections in music.  Training the ears to begin to predict what will…

Students Research Presidents in Second Grade

Second Graders at Grant Elementary took a look back in time during the month of February.  In honor of President’s Day, students read a number of stories, both fiction and non-fiction, about presidents.  Each student then selected either Washington or Lincoln to research on their own. Using their new information, each child created their own mini biography report, including everything from a table…

Learning the Life Cycle of Chickens!

ELL students at Grant Elementary are participating in an “Embryology Unit” through the Nebraska Extension in Madison County 4-H School Enrichment Program. Taking care of the incubator, candling the eggs, and watching the chicks hatch are some highlights of this unit. We are having an “egg-ceptional” time learning about the life cycle of chickens!

3rd Graders Pack Food for Mercy Meals

The 3rd Graders at Grant Elementary had a wonderful time packaging food for Mercy Meals.  On February 6 both classes worked together to package 12 boxes of food. We packaged food for 2,592 people in other countries that are hungry.  We had wonderful volunteers helping us out - Mrs. Moreno, Mrs. Currey, and Mrs. Uzzel. Thank you!

We had an amazing time!  It is fun helping people in need.
