Welcome Back to School!!!

Dear Grant Families: August 4, 2021
Welcome back to school! This is my absolute favorite time of the year; not only do we get to welcome students back to school, but also because the weather turns cooler, the leaves begin to change, and there are football games to watch!

Our mission is to prepare all students to pursue their goals for the future. For us to do that,…

1st Grade Learns about SMILE

Patty Prauner (Program Director, SMILE, Inc.) recently visited Mrs. Baker’s first grade classroom at Grant Elementary.  She shared a video and talked to the students about SMILE, the program she started in 1992, that provides recreational therapy on horseback for children and adults with a physical, mental, or speech challenge.

According to Patty, equine activities can develop self awareness,…

Life on the Farm in Second Grade

Second grade students at Grant Elementary recently participated in a virtual field trip to Life on the Farm, sponsored by the University of Nebraska Extension.  The field trip took on a new look this year, students had the opportunity to zoom in with other classrooms across Madison County.  Of course, some students commented how we are not really going on a field trip!  But, they soon became excited…

ELL Students Study the Life Cycle of Chickens

ELL students at Grant Elementary are participating in an “Embryology Unit” through the Nebraska Extension in Madison County 4-H School Enrichment Program. Taking care of the incubator, candling the eggs, and watching the chicks hatch are some highlights of this unit. We are having an “egg-ceptional” time learning about the life cycle of chickens!

Fun Facts in 4th Grade!

Math facts are an essential part of every student’s learning. At Grant Elementary, students spend time each day practicing their math facts. By knowing their math facts, students increase their accuracy when solving multi-step math problems.

In 4th grade, there are so many ways to practice math facts. Students can use different websites, like Xtramath or IXL. They can also use games! Some…

Vocabulary

Understanding vocabulary is very important for learners of all ages.  At NPS, our students are being introduced to new and unfamiliar vocabulary words every day - especially in reading and math.  In order to help our students get a better grasp at this vocabulary, the resource teachers at every level and building (elementary, middle school, junior high, and high school) are using a vocabulary instruction…

Kindergarten Learns About Dental Health

The Kindergartners in Mrs. Commerford's class at Grant School have been learning about Dental Health. The students learned about food and drinks that are good for your teeth. They did a few experiments to discover what happens to your teeth when you don't take care of them. In these pictures they are learning the proper way to brush your teeth. Don't forget to sing the "Happy Birthday" song as you…

Music News!

Due to extra precautions to prevent the spread of Covid-19, students stay in their classroom for music this year. This has caused some challenges, including limiting movement/dance, and limiting instruments, which are hard to transport and require sanitation since we share them. However, this doesn’t stop us from having fun making great music. It’s Chromebooks to the rescue! Each student can use…

Fourth Graders Thankful for Church Partnership

At the end of November, Grant Elementary students got to choose a book from Scholastic Book Clubs. We were excited because the First United Methodist church was buying books for the whole school! The church does this for us in December and May of every school year. After we chose our books, we couldn’t wait for them to come. The book I got was called Rescue Dogs. It is about a dog named Jet.

When…

Plant Life Cycles in First Grade

The first graders in Mrs. Morgan’s first grade have been hard at work learning about plants.

As part of our Wonders reading program the class used the essential question  “How Plants Change as They Grow”,  to learn more about plant life cycles. It was wonderful to tie in science and reading together.

They read many non-fiction books, asked questions, used teamwork, problem solved…
