Math is an essential part of life. Second graders are working hard to become stronger mathematicians each and every day. Each day we work in many different practice tasks and activities to help improve our skills in a variety of areas. So far this year we have been working on:
* skip-counting by 5’s, 10’s, and 100’s.
* using various strategies to add and subtract within 20 AND 100! Students have LOVED expanding their abilities to work with TWO 2-digit numbers at once. The more practice they get, the more confident they become!
* learning to read bar graphs and picture graphs and interpret their information. Additionally, we are creating graphs on our own! It is so fun to collect information from our classmates and graph the data!
* identifying numbers as even or odd. Students have learned tricks to help them read REALLY BIG numbers, such as 3,491, and determine if they are odd or even.
* place value! We are working to compare numbers using our greater than/less than symbols, identify the value of numbers in different locations, and order numbers from least to greatest or vice versa.
* time and money! We have been working to correctly identify the hour hand vs. the minute hand, plus telling time to the nearest five minutes. With money, we have reviewed our coins and have been working to count groups of them with totals less than $1.00.
Phew -- that is quite a list and that is all covered within the first hour and a half of our day! These kiddos are working so hard to be Second Grade Master Mathematicians -- they are going to do BIG things yet this year! I just love that their excitement for math is SO contagious!
