Every child is an artist. However, children need an opportunity and time to use their own creativity to experiment and create their own authentic art. My goal is to give students this opportunity in art class. I believe art should be about the process of learning and creating, not just about an end product.
I strive to give students as many choices in art as possible, and they are working to open a variety of centers this year. So far they have opened the drawing and collage center. They do this by learning how to use materials correctly, create artwork with those materials and take care of supplies. As they are unlocking new art tools to use within our art room, they are learning how to push themselves to stretch and explore their thinking as they experiment, take risks, and problem solve while creating their artwork. As time goes on, I hope to open several other art centers including architecture, painting, sculpture, printmaking and fiber arts.
