Animal Research in Second Grade

Second Graders at Grant Elementary have learned about animals! They recently took a field trip to the Henry Doorly Zoo! For many students, this was their first visit to the zoo. Students spent the entire day touring the zoo in small groups visiting many of the exhibits and learning about animals. Before going to the zoo, each student chose a zoo animal to research. Students completed research using non-fiction books and websites to gather information about their animal. Second graders researched the animals appearance, habitat, diet, and behavior. While at the zoo, students wanted to make sure they got to observe their animal that they were researching. Students returned from their trip, completing their own nonfiction books about their animal. They added special pages to their books that included a dedication page, copyright page, table of contents, glossary, and even a page about the researcher (themselves). Second graders were very proud of their hard work becoming authors and illustrators. They shared their finished work with the kindergarten students and other staff members at Grant! What an amazing zoo experience we had in second grade!
