For first-grade students, mastering high-frequency words is a fundamental step toward reading fluency and comprehension. These common words form the backbone of early reading materials! When students have immediate recognition of these words, it allows our young learners to shift their focus from decoding individual sounds to understanding the meaning of a text.
To ensure retention and engagement in this critical skill development, it is highly beneficial to actively involve students in their own learning process. This school year, we have started something new! Students now have a visual of how they are improving throughout the school year as well as seeing the end goal, which is climbing to the tallest mountain! Throughout each quarter of the school year, our First Graders in the district are needing to learn about twenty-five high-frequency words totaling one-hundred by the end of the school year. Each quarter we are aiming to have the students move their star to a different mountain!
With this visual and being able to move their star on their own, they have a sense of ownership, making the typically repetitive task of memorization more enjoyable, meaningful, and ultimately more effective for long-term success. During parent-teacher conferences and other family events held at the school, students now have the opportunity to show their progress with their parents. This promotes extra practice outside of the classroom and also gives our students more encouragement to keep climbing!
