In honor of the heroes of September 11th, 2001, fourth-grade students at Grant Elementary School wrote heartfelt thank-you letters to their local fire and police departments. As part of a special classroom lesson about Patriots’ Day, the students learned about the tragic events of 9/11 and the incredible bravery of the first responders who ran toward danger to save lives. Teachers guided students through age-appropriate discussions, helping them understand the sacrifices made by firefighters, police officers, and emergency personnel on that day—and every day since.
This annual letter-writing project allowed students to connect the past to the present, expressing gratitude to the men and women who continue to protect their community. Many letters included words of encouragement, and messages like “You are our heroes” and “Thank you for keeping us safe.” Through this patriotic act of kindness, the students at Grant Elementary showed that even the youngest citizens can carry forward the spirit of unity, courage, and thankfulness that defines Patriots' Day.
