Students had some fun the first few weeks of classes in Lab and Library. On top of being reminded how they take care of books and check out, students also learned about S.T.E.A.M. S.T.E.A.M stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. On some Wednesdays in lab students get to put their problem solving skills and team work to the test. I give the students some problem to solve or something where they have to figure out how to do it and then I give them some supplies. These are often common household items like straws, toothpicks and playdoh and other times, they are items that we have specifically bought for this purpose. Not all grades do the same thing and this was one of those times. I had the Kindergarten explore with playdoh. Their task was to create something out of playdoh. 1st and 3rd graders were given playdoh and popsicle sticks. They were instructed to create a free standing tower. The challenge was to make it the tallest tower. 4th graders got to use Keva Planks. They learned how to basket weave them and then replicate the build to create their own. Everyone was challenged and had so much fun!
