Norfolk Public Schools administrators know that many students and parents are concerned by the increase in covid numbers in our community and want to assure you that we are closely evaluating the number of cases in our school buildings. These numbers are updated weekly on the Covid-19 Student Health Dashboard published on the school website, and currently all NPS school buildings remain in the “yellow” precaution levels that allow for fully in-person instruction.
We will continue to follow our protocols detailed in the “Return To School Plan (Covid-19)” approved by the NPS Board of Education in October 2020. This plan includes many mitigation measures including mandatory mask wearing, symptom checks, social distancing, hand washing, and increased sanitation of schools and buses at the “yellow” precaution level. Please continue to support these efforts at school by screening your students and family members for symptoms and staying home if you are not well.
Norfolk Public Schools will base the decision regarding student learning (fully in-person, hybrid, fully remote) on several factors including, but not solely related to, the Elkhorn Logan Valley Public Health Covid Risk Dial. Consideration will also be given to many factors including: positivity rate in the building, positivity rate in the district, type of spread, ability to social distance, ability to cohort, ability to fill staffing positions, and any special circumstances. The individual school building's color risk level will only change if these discussions indicate it is warranted for the safety of students, staff, and the community. Norfolk Public Schools must also adhere to all Directed Health Measures (DHMs) from the State of Nebraska.
On 11/04/2020, Twenty-nine (29) public and private schools met with Three Rivers Public Health Department and Elkhorn Logan Valley Public Health Department to discuss schools’ protocols and the Risk Dials. Although each of these 29 public and private schools have created their own protocols, they all agreed with the guidance they received from the Three Rivers and Elkhorn Logan Valley Health Departments, which indicated that the risk dials are just one of many indicators that should be looked at when considering the risk level in schools. Our Public Health Directors, Governor, and Commissioner of Education have all stressed that schools are the safest place for students to be and that we need to strive to keep students in school as much and as long as possible.
“We have learned a lot in the past three months and because of the terrific work our schools are doing have found that keeping students in school is the safest place for them to be. School staff and students are wearing masks, social distancing and sanitizing on a frequent basis. Because of all of these efforts we have found very little transmission of COVID-19 among students and staff members within our schools.” stated Terra Uhing, Executive Director of Three Rivers Public Health Department.
“The Risk Dial serves as a visual data review tool within each county to provide an insight into the spread of the virus,” stated Gina Uhing, Health Director for Elkhorn Logan Valley Public Health Department. “For school districts, the number of cases within a school building or classroom serves as an indicator for how well the protocols in place are working and if adjustments are needed within the school environment.”
It is the goal of Norfolk Public Schools to provide a safe learning environment for our students, staff and community.
