Magical Weekend, Not Just Night...Two Snow Days!

Article Written by Alannah Goode

Is there a better way to kick off the start of the second semester with a couple of basketball games and a dance? No, there is not a better way. After a long, two-week break that spanned over Christmas and New Year’s Eve all the way up to Monday, January 9, students got to spend a few days back in the classroom: five, to be exact. During that time getting back into routine, the majority of students at Norfolk High School had their eyes and minds set on the upcoming weekend. The Winter Royalty dance was going to be held that Saturday night, so that meant a day of fun. And it was not just the dance that had captured their attention, but also the boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball games that would be held that night as well. It was surely going to be a magical night, but a magical weekend it turned out to be.

The night of Saturday, January 14 was most certainly a special one, even though the Panthers did face a loss. The girls’ varsity basketball team suffered a 47 to 37 loss against Omaha Westside. Picking up the night, the boys’ varsity basketball team pushed through to surpass Westside by a magical one point, finishing the game with a score of 52 over Westside’s 51.

After the games, students either proceeded from the stands or the court, or they came dressed in their finest from the chilly outside, to gather in the Johnny Carson Theater for Winter Royalty coronation.

The senior boy candidates for Winter Royalty were Zaine Gallagher, Lane McCallum, Tate Neilsen, Brian Saravia, and Sutton Tennant. The senior girl candidates for Winter Royalty were Sydney Krause, Sara Neyens, Sierra Peterson, Paige Reynoldson, and Mariah Yagow. McCallum and Reynoldson took home the crowns for Winter Royalty King and Queen, respectively.

Once the dance had ended, and the Sunday had passed into memory, students got to enjoy an extra two days off from school. It was a rare occurrence, having two snow days in a row, but there was certainly no complaining.

Coupled with two hard-fought games and a magical dance, the night of Saturday, January 14 was one to remember. At the end of the night, everyone deserved to feel like royalty, and everyone most certainly did. And the fun did not want to end there, however, because the students got to enjoy a four-day weekend. The weekend was already on its way to being one to remember, but with the addition of the rare occurrence of two snow days, it will definitely be in students’ memories for a while to come. The whole thing was magical for everyone.
