As we finish our 6th week of home-based learning at Norfolk Public Schools, I would like to thank you for working so closely with our teachers to provide your student with remote (home-based) learning opportunities this spring. I know that this sudden transition starting 3/25 was difficult, but I am very proud of how our school staff, students, families, and community came together in spite of the sudden announcement and quick turnaround to home-based learning. I also know that there is room for improvement in the process and that future remote (home-based) learning opportunities would benefit from further enhancement.
Although we do not know yet what “school” will look like this fall, the Nebraska Commissioner of Education has told school leadership that we need to prepare for the possibility of continued remote (home-based) learning. We hope that this is not necessary, but want to be prepared to best serve our students if it becomes a reality. Therefore, the School Board has made the decision to end our current remote (home-based learning) opportunities with students one week early so that we can invest that time in preparing our teachers for next fall via professional development, technology training, and collaborative work time.
This Thursday, May 14th will be our last day of new, enrichment learning activities for students. Students will still be allowed to reassess and complete previously assigned work from May 15th-May 21st, and teachers will provide feedback and assistance regarding these assessments and assignments, if needed. However, no new student work or instruction will be provided. Teachers’ main focus from May 15-21 will be preparing to provide high-quality, standards-based instruction to students via remote (home based) learning opportunities next fall.
We apologize if this causes you any inconvenience, and we want to thank you for working with us during this difficult and uncertain situation. Please stay safe, stay healthy, and stay strong! My sincere hope is that we are able to provide in person teaching in our buildings next fall. We miss seeing our students and cannot wait to have them back in our classrooms!

Al terminar nuestra sexta semana de aprendizaje en el hogar en Norfolk Public Schools, me gustaría agradecerles por trabajar tan estrechamente con nuestros maestros para brindar a sus estudiantes oportunidades de aprendizaje remoto (en el hogar) esta primavera. Sé que esta transición repentina que comenzó el 3/25 fue difícil, pero estoy muy orgullosa de cómo se unieron nuestro personal escolar, los estudiantes, las familias y la comunidad a pesar del repentino anuncio y el rápido cambio al aprendizaje en el hogar. También sé que hay margen de mejora en el proceso y que las futuras oportunidades de aprendizaje remoto (en el hogar) se beneficiarían de una mejora adicional.
Aunque todavía no sabemos qué aspecto tendrá la "escuela" este otoño, el Comisionado de Educación de Nebraska ha dicho al liderazgo de la escuela que debemos prepararnos para la posibilidad de un aprendizaje remoto (en el hogar) continuo. Esperamos que esto no sea necesario, pero queremos estar preparados para servir mejor a nuestros estudiantes si se hace realidad. Por lo tanto, la Junta Escolar ha tomado la decisión de poner fin a nuestras actuales oportunidades remotas (aprendizaje en el hogar) con los estudiantes una semana antes para que podamos invertir ese tiempo en preparar a nuestros maestros para el próximo otoño a través del desarrollo profesional, capacitación tecnológica y trabajo colaborativo.
Este jueves 14 de mayo será nuestro último día de nuevas actividades de aprendizaje enriquecedoras para los estudiantes. Los estudiantes aún podrán reevaluar y completar el trabajo previamente asignado del 15 al 21 de mayo, y los maestros proporcionarán comentarios y asistencia con respecto a estas evaluaciones y tareas, si es necesario. Sin embargo, no se proporcionará trabajo o instrucción nuevo para estudiantes. El enfoque principal de los maestros del 15 al 21 de mayo se preparará para proporcionar a los estudiantes instrucción de alta calidad basada en estándares a través de oportunidades de aprendizaje remoto (en el hogar) el próximo otoño.
Nos disculpamos si esto le causa algún inconveniente, y queremos agradecerle por trabajar con nosotros durante esta situación difícil e incierta. ¡Por favor manténgase seguro, saludable y fuerte!
